Cannons Erupt for Twelve Hits; Bullpen Continues Greatness

The Purcellville Cannons were back in action tonight following an off-day against the Harrisonburg Turks in a well-fought game in Purcellville.

Following some roster moves for Purcellville’s squad, the Cannons were depleted in the middle-infield positions, so we saw an unusual lineup for Purcellville’s night.

Shaggy Freeland started shortstop, Tommy Baggett played the hot-corner at third, new-comer Alec Aleywine manned first, and Christian Garabedian patrolled second.

James Beasley took the mound for Purcellville and found themselves down at the end of Harrisonburg’s first inning.  They put together three hits to score a run and give themselves an early lead, 1-0.

The Cannons tied it up eventually by the third inning, coming from a Baggett RBI single that scored Shaggy to tie it up 1-1.

After Beasley let up another run in the fourth, the Cannons quickly turned around and Garabedian tied it himself, providing a solo-homerun to tie it and give him three on the season. 2-2.

The Cannons scored two more in the sixth, Gunnar Ricketts gave Purcellville the lead by scorching a homerun down the right field line that left in a hurry, 4-2 Purcellville.

Beasley’s night was done after six full, being relieved by Valley League All-Star Dalton Oates.  Beasley’s line was 6.0 IP, 8H, 2ER, 1BB, 5K.

Oates continued his brilliant no earned run streak, elevating it to 17.1 innings this season.  He also has twenty-two strikeouts during those innings.

Purcellville put together another run in the seventh, off of a Sergio Lopez sacrifice fly, that scored a 3-4 with two stolen base Matt Koehler.  Koehler now sports a .310 average on the season.

Matthew Marsili took the eighth, only allowing two runs and Anthony Zimmerman handled the ninth, recording his sixth save on the season and like-Oates, owns a earned run strike, his at 12.1 innings.

Aleywine finished 2-4 and Garabedian finished 3-4 with a homerun and a double, along with two runs scored.  He now has a .256 average on the season.

The Cannons now sit five games above .500 at 17-11 and are now three games behind the North Division leading Front Royal Cardinals.

The Cannons next game is Friday July 13 against the Woodstock River Bandits in Purcellville and their next game after that is away, on Saturday July 14 against the Staunton Braves.  Gates open at 5:30 and the game starts at 7:00 pm.
