Cannons Top First Place Covington; Bullpen Continues Success

Thursday Night, the Covington Lumberjacks traveled up to Purcellville to take on the second place Cannons in a game that was originally scheduled in Covington.

June 4 was the original scheduled home game in Purcellville against Covington but after bad weather in Purcellville, they traveled down to Southern Virginia and Thursday’s game was played in Purcellville.

Trey Shepard of Walters State Community College got the start from head coach Brett Fuller against the first place Lumberjacks.

Trey ran into trouble in the first inning as Covington’s first run came off a few hits and a sacrifice fly to make it an early 1-0 lead.

The Cannons quickly gave themselves the lead as Kam Armstrong sliced a two-out single past the diving first basemen and was brought home on a Tekwaa ‘Tek’ Whyte double.  Whyte was then brought home on a Kenny Oyama triple that kept running away from the diving left fielder to make it 2-1 Purcellville.

Valley Baseball League leader in homeruns JD Mundy upped his total to twelve last night, after hitting two off of the Purcellville pitching; his first one came in the fourth inning against Shepard.  Shepard’s day was finished after 3.2 IP after exiting the game with a blister on his throwing hand.

His final line: 3.2 IP, 2ER, 2BB, 2K and his ERA on the season is now 3.07.

He was relieved by Valley League All-Star Dalton Oates who continues his scoreless innings streak, pitching 2.1 IP, striking out three and only allowing two hits.  Oates came in the game with the bases loaded, all of whom were Shepard’s responsibility and finished the game with the win; his second on the season.

The Cannons put up a four spot in the fifth inning, Oyama led off with a walk, Shaggy Freeland singled to move him to third and was brought home on a Troy Weatherly single.

Matt Koehler singled to score Freeland and during T.K. McWhertor’s at-bat, the runners advanced to second and third.  Both were brought home on a Tyler ‘Blade’ Baker double, who brings his RBI total on the season to eleven and is now hitting .254 on the season. 6-2, Purcellville.

Mundy continued to be the thorn in Purcellville’s side, hitting his second homerun in the seventh, a three-run homerun, to cut into the lead 6-5.

That homerun came off of Trey Alderman who came in the seventh and only recorded one out before giving up the Mundy homerun.  He was relieved by Vinny Adams who went 1.2 IP and struck out three, lowering his ERA to 2.38.

All-Star Closer Anthony ‘Tony’ Zimmerman came in the game for the ninth and struck out two to finish the game.  He continues his dominance, pitching in seven games and having three saves on the season all while not allowing a run and striking out twenty.

The Cannons now sit two games above .500 at 13-11 and are now 3.5 games behind the North Division leading Front Royal Cardinals.

The Cannons next game is Friday July 6 against the New Market Rebels in New Market and their next game after that is home, on Saturday July 7 against the Woodstock RiverBandits.  Gates open at 5:30 and the game starts at 7:00 pm.
