Cannons Take First Place; Win Against Rival Winchester

The Purcellville Cannons traveled to Winchester, Va. today in a Northern Division match-up against the Royals that would extend Purcellville’s lead in the Division.

James Beasley got the nod from Coach Brett Fuller in this game, starting once already against Winchester and recording a win on June 25.  Beasley owns a 3.10 ERA on the season, starting in six games and has a 3-1 record; tonight he got the no-decision.

The Royals struck first in the second inning, scoring two runs on a William Welsh single.  Purcellville quickly fired back in the top of the third, when Tyler ‘Blade’ Baker hit a RBI single and when Shaggy Freeland hit a double that scored Baker.  2-2.

In the top of the fourth, Purcellville scored three times.  While Alec Aleywine was batting, three wild pitches scored Sergio Lopez, who had doubled to get on base.  While Gunnar Ricketts was up, the Winchester pitcher continued to miss the catcher and two more runs scored on wild pitches.  5-2, Purcellville.

Dalton Oates took the mound for the fourth, while Beasley’s night was done he was in-line for the no-decision after Purcellville took the lead, but Beasley did not complete five innings.  His final line was: 3.0 IP, 8H, 2ER, 0BB, 3K.

Oates ultimately gave up two runs, ending his scoreless innings streak at 20.2 innings pitched.  Oates’ only hiccup over his three innings was in the fourth when he allowed the two runs, to make it 5-4 Purcellville.

Oates cruised over the next two innings and now carries a 0.76 ERA over 23.2 IP.  His line in this game was: 3.0 IP, 3H, 2ER, 1BB, 4K and the win.  His record is also 3-0 in eleven games.

Aleywine recorded his first Cannons-RBI in this contest, smashing a RBI single up the middle, scoring Christian Garabedian, who had tripled to start the inning.  6-4, Purcellville.

Kyle Hayes led the sixth inning off for Purcellville, hitting a deep fly ball into the Winchester night, over the left field fence to make it 7-4 Purcellville.

The Cannons scored again in the sixth when ‘Blade’ scored on a wild-pitch while Garabedian was batting; 8-4 Purcellville.

One Dalton was relieved by the other, Dalton Whitaker entered the game for the seventh and eighth inning, striking out two in the process.
