Cannons Down Cardinals, Bullpen Shines

After playing the Front Royal Cardinals in their season opener, the Cannons look to play a full game and take revenge on them as well.

James Beasley of George Mason University took the bump for Purcellville today going up against an undefeated Front Royal team.  Beasley did his job and only allowed two hits over his five innings pitched, along with five strikeouts and zero walks.

Blake Simmons, a sophomore out of Georgia Southern University kick-started the Cannons offense by blasting a two-run homerun to the deepest part of Fireman’s Field, giving the Cannons an early 2-0 lead.  Simmons finished the day with three RBI.

The Cannons busted open for five runs in the fifth inning, with Tyler Baker and Kenny Oyama both being hit-by-pitches and coming around to score.  A series of walks and a blast down the left field line by Matt Koehler scored two more for Purcellville giving them a 7-0 lead after five full innings.

In the sixth inning, Vinny Adams was placed in the game for relief of Beasley and quickly gave up two runs, but proved non-fatal.

Parker Dyson, a returning Cannon from last season came in and pitched two spectacular innings of relief, striking out five of the necessary six outs.  Dan Hobbs made an appearance for the ninth inning and struck out two in the process.

Jacob “Shaggy” Freeland, T.K. McWhertor, and Matt Koehler all walked twice as the Cannons hand Front Royal their first loss of the season, 7-2.

The Cannons next game is tomorrow, June 7 in Waynesboro, Va. as they take on the Generals.  Their next home game is Sat. June 9 against the New Market Rebels; both games start at 7:00.
