Cannons Hold Fundraiser, Pre-Season Look at New Team

PURCELLVILLE, VIRGINIA — The Purcellville Cannons are a Valley Baseball League team, that moved from Winchester to Purcellville last season and had an amazing welcome.  The Cannons recruit collegiate players from all over the country, ranging anywhere from Division 1, all the way to Junior College players.  Last year, the team started out rough, but finished with a 19-23 record and crowned Marshall University’s Tyler Ratliff and Purcellville native, Will Reed CO-MVP’s on the season.

A few weeks before the teams’ games start, they hold their annual Fan Fest and Cash Party to help raise funds for the team.  There are silent auctions, live auctions, live music, catered food, and even a $500 giveaway at the end of the night.  A few of the items during the live auction were a Cannons Bourbon Barrel Top, signed Stan Musial picture, along with a Carlos Correa #1 Draft Pick signed baseball.

The team was able to acquire such a high-valued ball due to the fact that former Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa’s younger brother, Jean Carlos Correa will be playing for the team this season.  General Manager and third base coach Ridge Fuller said, “J.C. Correa will be playing second base for us this season and I really look forward to him playing for us and representing Purcellville.”

Purcellville is a huge baseball town, so the reception that the team received last season into this season has been phenomenal.  The event that was held on March 31, saw a few important political figures for the town with Mayor Kwasi Fraser and Town-Councilman Ryan Cool both making appearances at the event.

“The thing that I am looking forward to the most for this season is seeing in everyone in Purcellville come out and support their local sports team”, said Cool on Friday night.  The Cannons also have six players from last year return to play another summer: Will Reed (CL), Tyler Ratliff (INF), Alex London (LHP), Onassis Matos (C), Raul Cabrera (INF), and Jarrett Clymer (OF).  “I look forward to seeing Raul Cabrera step back on the field.  I, and many other fans alike really enjoyed hearing Cabrera’s name over the PA every game”, said Cool when asked about who he wants to see on the field this year.

Of the thirty-one players currently on the roster, twenty-five are new.  They are welcoming four pairs of two players from the same college: Trevor McMurray (RHP) and Tyler Horsley (RHP) from Murray State in Kentucky, Kyle Morton (RHP) and Sean Gabel (RHP) from Santa Fe Community College, Tyler Ratliff (INF) and Jacob Bailey (RHP) from Marshall University in West Virginia, and lastly Daniel Meyers (INF) and Salvatore Lovaglio (LHP) from North Greenville University in South Carolina.

The team is still selling their season passes for the upcoming season and are also looking for more local advertisements.  They also have a program for the players since not all of them are local, where families in Purcellville can host a player for the summer and even provide work for the player for some spending money.  For more information, please go to: purcellvillecannons.com
